"Sonnets in the City", charts a group of young acting students on their journey to finding personal meaning and wisdom within more than a dozen of Shakespeare's juicier and more dramatic sonnets. The film intertwines deciphering and performing Shakespeare in the 21st century, the culmination of that process where the chosen sonnets come to life in New York City's luscious Slate Bar & Billiards in downtown Chelsea, and the back story of the relationships between the directors, coaches, teachers and students.
Acting coach and actor, Joe Siravo (Sopranos, Jersey Boys, Shark Tale), Fay Simpson, creator of the Lucid Body and teacher at Stonestreet Studios' NYU Screen Acting Workshop and Yale, and film director, Artistic Director of Stonestreet Studios & the Stonestreet/NYU Tisch School of the Arts Screen Acting Workshop, Alyssa Rallo Bennett (The Pack, Ms. Fortune, Juden Rift) invite us into the process of grappling with unrequited passion, lust and anger, love, intimacy and compassion as well as loss, disappointment and respect in front of and behind-the-scenes, bringing to life the deeply human and universal themes that Shakespeare poetically wrote about.
As it's title suggests, Sonnets in the City, a feature length docudrama, presents Shakespeare's sonnets in a contemporary, accessible and relevant way, helping actor, director and audience break through the language, period, and stylistic barriers that often exist in many Shakespeare films and live dramas.
Inspired by films like Al Pacino's Looking for Richard and Robert Altman's Company, "Sonnets in the City" takes a unique, young and fresh approach to rediscovering Shakespeare's juicier sonnets.
